Archeological Dig

For a field trip, one of our homeschool groups  simulated an archeological dig. A week before, the Dads had dug out this hole and layered it with "artifacts" for the kids to find. The children were taught to use a grid system
to place their discoveries on.
Actually these girls did their digging in plastic tubs filled with dirt in four layers. Sewing items, paper, charcoal and rocks could be found in their layers which they had to record. The artifacts on the bottom are from the oldest civilizations  because dirt and silt keeps piling on top. After the older children finished in this site the girls took a turn digging.

The students played outside after we ate a picnic lunch and the parents chatted and enjoyed the view!
