Living History

It was such a beautiful day on Sunday, that we treated ourselves to an afternoon at Harpers Ferry, WV. This historic town was the sight of a Civil War Battle because it had an all important Armory. It is also strategically located at the place where the Shenandoah River joins the Potomac River and they flow as one toward Washington, D.C . John Brown ,a passionate abolitionist began a riot of some kind here to help free slaves and was taken captive and later hanged. Today it is lovingly restored and interpreted in the original buildings that house museums and Living History displays. Some buildings are privately owned and are used as shops, restaurants and homes. The confluence of the two rivers is spectacular to see especially from the long walking bridge across the river that parallels a train bridge. The train came past every 15 minutes and could be seen going through the tunnel into the mountain.

It was an absolute joy to do something together as a family. When our grown boys were younger, we explored many Civil War Battlefields most of which are within an hour or two of our town .But then we started to get busy with activities and home improvement projects and nursing small babies who needed to nap and got away from touring sites. We never did too many other
tourist trap things because with a big family one can't
afford the entrance fees.It is time to get back to these very inexpensive and educational trips to share them with our younger boys before they get too grown up.
This Catholic Church is St. Peter's.It was closed to the
public on the afternoon we were there, but on previous
visits we have been inside and seen a life-sized Crucifixion
depiction in wood and marble. It is set very high up and we
were winded after climbing the slate stairs.
